Oogenesis

Oogenesis

Primordial germ cells reach the ovary in 5th week

All primordial germ cells get converted to oogonium by 3rd month

All oogonia get converted to primary oocyte by 5th – 7th month

Completes only prophase

Go to resting phase ( Diplotene phase ) [ remain in resting phase until puberty ]

After puberty the primary oocyte

↓ complete meiosis 1

Secondery oocyte + 1st polar body (formed due to unequal division of the cytoplasm) [polar body : cell without cytoplasm]

↓ meiosis 2

completes prophase and metaphase (metaphase arrest for 24 hours)

Sperm+ Sperm-
Secondary oocyte completes meiosis 2 and it forms ovum and 2nd polar body. Corpus luteum persists for 14 days and shrinks and forms whit scar called as corpus albicans.
